First as tragedy, then as farce. Deep Trap is an ironic play on the genre of "trip-hop", a typically condescending, redundant and irrelevant genre name thinly veiled as a remark on the need for hip hop to become "respectable" by adopting the dour, hyper-emotive mood characteristic of british whites. The label seemed to come about as if plenty of hip hop didn't already represent and explore the emotions, intensity and reflectiveness of so-called "trip-hop". On the other hand, in a typical move, the album forces biting, bitter irony to overflow into timid sincerity.

The material itself is a more developed and beat-heavy version of the sample-based, lofi surrealism of the albums ;(semicolon) i and ii, using aural deception to fade between hifi and lofi, attempting a juxtaposition of trendy, high-brow "lofi hiphop" and visceral, naive, genuine aleatory and malfunction, with plenty of odd compositional choices and unpredictable turns of style and mood. The album varies in mood from sedate and pensive on the first two tracks, to the brutally alienating on its eponymous track.
